Turkish Embassy in Wellington

Ambassador's Message

Distinguished members of the Turkish Community,

Distinguished friends from New Zealand,

The foundation of the friendship between Turkey and New Zealand dates back to the poignant memory of a war fought a century ago in Gelibolu/Çanakkale. The two nations have nonetheless successfully built a unique friendship out of the memories of the war, which is fit to serve as an example to the rest of the world.

The Turkish Embassy in Wellington is the farthest Turkish diplomatic mission from home. On the other hand, the strong bond of friendship between our countries render these distances irrelevant and bring us closer together. The commemorative services that are held in both Turkey and New Zealand every year on 25 April are the best manifestation of this special bond.

Our two countries share a common approach with respect to international developments. These are undoubtedly shaped by the common values that we have adopted, most importantly democracy. New Zealand demonstrated immediately that it is a peerless friend and stood by Turkey against an existential threat to Turkish democracy.

We are determined to develop and deepen the excellent bilateral ties, including those in the fields of trade and culture.

Our citizens who have settled in this faraway, yet friendly land, and taken part in all walks of life, will remain a source of pride to us, and continue to contribute to the development of our warm relations with New Zealand.

I am honoured to serve to further enhance the relations between my homeland and New Zealand, the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Sincerely,

Ahmet Ergin

Ambassador
